Message from our chair

WES 2022 will focus on the practical implementation of allyship.
The support of allies, particularly male allies, can accelerate us to achieve the 30 by 30 Initiative and build diverse, equitable workplaces.

Our hope for attendees is that they will leave the summit with usable strategies that will help make their workplaces safer and more inclusive. Attendees in positions of greater influence will learn form the experiences shared at the summit, gaining empathy and recommendations to start creating more significant institutional change.

All attendees should leave with a greater awareness and sense of community to enhance their support network. WES 2022 is for anyone who wishes to advocate for change on behalf of all women.

The 30 by 30 Panel is held every year at WES, Women in Engineering Summit, to keep track of the progression of the 30 by 30 Initiative by Engineers Canada, which is a key strategy of WES. The 30 by 30 Initiative seeks to achieve the goal, by the year 2030, that 30% of newly licensed engineers and geoscientists in Canada will be female. According to the Engineers Canada website, the national number is 20.6 % as of December 31, 2020 (an increase of 2.7% since last year, yahoo!). These panelists represent engineering and geoscience regulators, academia, government and industry.

Did you know the Women in Engineering summit is entirely organized, run, and managed by volunteers? Today we’d like to shine the spotlight on one of the many individuals that help make WES a success: introducing Carina Butterworth!

💼 Carina is currently a full-time faculty member at SAIT and a full-time PhD student at the University of Calgary, specializing in Biomedical Engineering. With over 10 years of experience as a P.Eng., she was honored to receive the prestigious International Women's Day Catalyst Award in 2020. She also volunteers as a chapter coordinator for the Canadian Association for Girls in Science, further fueling her passion for empowering girls in STEM.

🌟 When asked about this year's theme, she shares her personal insights:

💬 "From conversations with internationally trained women engineers, I've learned that many of them don't continue working in engineering positions after marriage. I strongly believe that all women who have invested time and effort into becoming engineers should be empowered to pursue their engineering careers in Canada. It not only brings fresh perspectives and innovation to the industry but also ensures that their skills are utilized to the fullest."

As a Corrosion Engineer at Innotech Alberta, Andrea is making waves in her field. With a Master's degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Alberta and a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Universidad Industrial de Santander in Colombia, South America, she's got the brains and the expertise to match!

Applied research for internal corrosion in pipelines, heavy crude oil, petroleum/reservoir engineering, and solvent injection? That's Andrea's playground! Her skills are unmatched, and she's a force to be reckoned with in the industry.

Not only is Andrea a registered P.Eng. with APEGA, but she conquered the new 22 competencies for the P.Eng. application process like a boss! She's not just climbing the ladder herself; she's also a mentor to countless colleagues on their own P.Eng. journey, sharing her valuable insights and lessons learned along the way.

Fueling success in the refining industry! ⛽💪 Nicole Hynes, the Director of Operations Support in Refining and Logistics at Suncor, has been driving excellence for 18 years. 🚀 As a Business Improvement Lead, she's a force to be reckoned with, prioritizing and standardizing initiatives to enhance downstream assets. 💼✨ Leading the R&L Ops Support team, Nicole also oversees risk management, business planning, capital portfolio management, and fuel quality.

With a background in process engineering, capital development, learning & competency, and environment, health & safety, she's a true powerhouse! 💡💼 Nicole's journey began in Leamington, Ontario, and she holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Western Ontario (2003). She's also equipped herself with an MBA specializing in Natural Resources & Energy from the University of Alberta (2009). 🎓🌿

Unlocking student success at the University of Alberta! 🎓🌟 Raymond Matthias, the Director of the Student Service Centre, is here to make your academic journey exceptional.

In the past he was the Strategic Advisor to the Associate Dean of Outreach at the Faculty of Engineering where he supported the promotion of the first Women In Engineering Summit back in 2018. Raymond was a Manager of Student Services at the Faculty of Engineering, and International Student Specialist at the University of Alberta International Centre. He describes himself as a post-secondary student services professional with a deep portfolio of administrative experience and advising skills. Raymond has worked in different capacities along the student journey from pre-arrival orientation to convocation. To add more interesting facts about him, he is a professionally competent speaker of Mandarin Chinese and Japanese and is currently a member of the Club Bilingue d’Edmonton Toastmasters Club working at bringing his French to full working proficiency to better connect with francophone colleagues and students. Finally, Raymond holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours also from the University of Alberta.

Meet Claudia, a founder and long-term supporter of

Meet Claudia, a founder and long-term supporter of the Women in Engineering Summit and a speaker for the 2023 event!

Claudia Gomez-Villeneuve is a professional engineer, university professor, EDI champion, and a recently appointed Fellow of Engineers Canada. Before switching to academia, she worked at Enbridge managing petroleum pipeline projects for over 15 years eventually becoming Supervisor. Today, Claudia works in five different universities teaching engineering design, strategic leadership, and project management in both English and Spanish. In April 2019 she shared the APEGA Summit Award, as a Champion for Women in Engineering and Geoscience, with the CCWESTT (Canadian Coalition of Women in Engineering, Science, Trades and Technology) 2018 Steering Committee. Since 2017 she has been an elected member of the APEGA Council, being re-elected by the memberships many times. Finally, in 2022 she was named "Individual Leader of the 30 by 30 Initiative" by Engineers Canada which was announced at their annual 30 by 30 conference. She is also the Founder of WES, Women in Engineering Summit Ltd, whose mission is to support the 30 by 30 Initiative by Engineers Canada by sharing practical solutions to keeping women happy in engineering and geoscience jobs for life. Claudia was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, and currently lives in Edmonton, Alberta, with her husband and their 3 children.

Follow her journey as she shares practical solutions for helping women in engineering and geoscience thrive through the many chapters of their career.

Kathy Baig is an engineer, currently Vice Presiden

Kathy Baig is an engineer, currently Vice President of Positioning and Development, and Senior Director of Transportation, for Stantec in Montreal, Quebec. She graduated in chemical engineering from Polytechnique Montreal, and also in business administration from HEC Montreal. She has worked in engineering for more than 10 years in the private sector. She says that as Vice-President, she has the privilege of contributing to the influence and growth of the Stantec team in Quebec, in addition to leading a transportation team in the Montreal metropolitan area. Kathy was notably a project manager in infrastructure and construction at Aéroports de Montréal, and an engineer and project manager at IBM and Pyrogenesis. After three years of active involvement as a director, she was named vice-president and then elected president of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ), a position she held from 2016 to 2022. Kathy is particularly proud of having contributed to restoring confidence in the engineering profession and promoting diversity in engineering, particularly among women and the next generation. Always committed to promoting the profession, Kathy is President of Engineers Canada, whose mission is to advance engineering through national collaboration.

Martha Vega-Smith, one of the Women in Engineering

Martha Vega-Smith, one of the Women in Engineering Summit (WES) 2023 Chairs, holds a B.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering from Venezuela where she started her professional career before moving to Canada in 2001. She worked with Enbridge Pipelines as a Pipeline Integrity Engineer and earned her P. Eng. with APEGA in 2010.

Today, Martha works with Suncor’s Enterprise Risk Management group as a Senior Risk Specialist in Calgary. Martha often talks about 9 being her lucky number and how proud she is of having 3 careers: Civil Engineering, Pipeline Integrity, and Risk Management, which have allowed her to continue her lifelong learning journey.

Canada welcomes an average of 300,000 immigrants p

Canada welcomes an average of 300,000 immigrants per year. This population is diverse in professional background, often with highly educated individuals arriving with masters or doctorate degrees, and others determined to pursuing those shortly after arriving.

Among those professionals are engineers, who not only have to learn how to navigate another language, culture and workplaces unwritten rules, but who also struggle to land jobs, move their careers forward and obtain their professional designation.

Gender based pay inequity often results in women in the household sacrificing their career pursuits, in favor of their male partners.

The 2023 Women in Engineering Summit will continue to address the challenges all genders and ethnicities face and how proven successful strategies can create a more inclusive workplace. It will also have a flavor for how universities, employers, regulators and peers can not only facilitate the transition of ITPs into Canada, but truly embrace their talents and invite them to sit at the table.

This is a great opportunity to positively influence the dynamics of our workplaces and communities, by embracing the contributions of everyone!

Have you applied for or received your Professional Engineering / Geoscience designation? We want to hear from you!

For many engineers, getting a Professional Engineering designation (P.Eng) is an important right of passage. Besides validating technical competency, a P.Eng. also represents the commitment and dedication that an individual brings to the field of engineering. Of course, the process for obtaining one’s P.Eng can often be long and arduous and the onus is put on the applicant to keep detailed records on work and project history throughout their time as a member-in-training. The process can be particularly difficult for women and other minorities who, for lack of role models or encouragement from mentors, may undervalue their experience and competence. As an organization advocating for inclusive work environments, we want to learn more about the challenges that young women face when applying for their P.Eng.
